Each year, we recognize a Girls on the Run alumna who is embracing joy, health and confidence in her life. We are now accepting entries for the annual Wondergirl Award through October 31!
Callie Jane Vickers is one of three Wondergirl Award winners for 2012. Callie Jane was in Girls on the Run in elementary school in Omaha, Nebraska. She now attends Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. Recently, we asked her to share some perspective on her Girls on the Run experience.
Q: What is your favorite Girls on the Run memory?
Callie Jane: My favorite memory for Girls on the Run always has to be running with my dad at the 5k at the end of each season and sprinting past him at the finish line. For most of the run, he would be pulling ahead of me, edging me onward. Then towards the end—when I could see the finish flags and crowds of people—a rush of adrenaline would kick in, and I would leave him eating my dust!
My dad was a cheerleader in a sense, singing me songs while running, making weird noises to embarrass me and make me laugh, and teaching me how to make snot rockets. He would even cheer on the people cheering us from the sidelines! I know my father probably had better things to do on a weekend morning than run a 5k, but nonetheless he chose to be with me, which made that sweat even sweeter. That hour of running with him was priceless, and I couldn't be more grateful.
Q: What is the most valuable lesson you learned from Girls on the Run?
Callie Jane: This is easy to answer. Optimism and confidence! Girls on the run taught me to be a loud, spirited individual who finds joy in the happier things and dismisses the negative. At a young age, I think I was fortunate enough to realize that by facing the harshness of the world or an average day with a smile and bright attitude, eventually the rest of the day will follow suit. I also found that being part of that optimistic Girls on the Run environment can have a huge positive impact on the decisions that create your identity and foundation for your future. Confidence was also key to maintaining this attitude, especially in such an awkward time as middle school where confidence is easily shaken.
Q: How do you activate your limitless potential?
Callie Jane: I activate my limitless potential by reflection. Journaling is one way I do this. It's a concrete way of reminding myself of what I've been struggling with and then writing myself a little pep talk about how I can overcome those obstacles. For me, journaling is not an everyday thing or even a weekly thing, but a “when needed” thing.
Running serves a similar purpose. When I run, I think of all the things that make me upset and how I'm leaving them behind me with every new step that I take. By the end of a run I feel empowered! My legs are an incredible, powerful, strong piece of machinery that can get me where I want to go and allow me to be rid of the negativity. That reminds me that I can do the same in other areas of my life. I am in control of my destiny, and I am also a strong, powerful machine.
Q: Why do you want to stay involved with Girls on the Run today?
Callie Jane: Girls on the Run established within me the inception of what a healthy, successful young girl in the 21st century should be: driven, hardworking, confident, open-minded, happy and empowered. I support what Girls on the Run does 100%!
Granted I'm only a freshmen in college, but ten years from now I'm hoping to have a daughter of my own, and approximately nineteen years from now, I'm hoping that Girls on the Run will be helping her learn new ways to embrace herself and become the beautiful young lady she wants to be. But until that time, I can help somebody else’s daughter!
Also, is it selfish of me to say that I enjoy the lessons probably just as much or more than the girls do? Sometimes big girls need to be reminded of these things as well.
