7 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

Posted Asha Ellison on 4/19/2018 |

We love Earth Day! For us, it’s a day where we can go outside and appreciate Mother Nature. After all, she has been incredible to us humans – providing us with natural food, shelter, beautiful scenery, animals and so much more.

It’s not unusual for people to take the day to sit on the beach and soak up the sun, go for a long hike, tend to their gardens or bask in the glory of their surroundings under a tree at the local park while catching up with a delightful book. But there are so many other ways to celebrate the fact that we get to live on this beautiful planet.

In honor of Earth Day, here are some ways that you can show Mother Nature a little love. The following activities are great ways to bond with and create memories with family and friends, make an impact on the local community and let your passion for the planet shine through.

Go outdoors: Weather permitting, take some time to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you. Go for a jog, hike, swim, take the dog on a walk or help a neighbor with their lawn. Just get out and do something – even if that means dancing in the rain!

Open the windows: Letting fresh air circulate throughout your home is not only refreshing, it also helps reduce energy dependence and your carbon footprint for a day.

Give Back: What better day than Earth Day to give back to the community? At Girls on the Run, each team participates in a Community Impact Project each season that promotes community engagement and volunteerism. This year, GOTR girls have participated thanked veterans for their service and walked alongside service members during a Veterans Walk, collected pet food to donate to local animal shelters and planted flowers to beautify their neighborhoods, but you don’t have to be a GOTR girl to give back! This Earth Day, host your own Community Impact Project that includes doing something nice for the environment like a roadside, beach or park cleanup.

Plant Greenery: Grab some garden tools, plants and flowers and plant a little love. If your local community garden allows, try planting herbs and veggies that can also feed and help sustain the community over time.

Decorate Your Brown Bag: The Earth Day Groceries Project is an environmental awareness project where people decorate paper grocery bags with environmental messages. The project is popular in the teaching community but can be done by anyone who wishes to participate. All it requires is colorful art supplies (crayons, colored pencils or paint) and a trip to the local supermarket. After receiving permission from the store manager to borrow paper bags, you can decorate the bags with colorful Earth Day messages and images to later return to the store for redistribution to customers—promoting and encouraging care for our planet.

Recycle: Instead of tossing glass, aluminum, cardboard or plastic recyclables in the trash, be intentional about getting these items to their respective recycling containers. Eliminating landfill waste and pollution is a win-win for all of us – especially our planet!

Get Moving: At Girls on the Run, we are committed to physical fitness and making healthy choices. On Earth Day, find alternative modes of transportation to help minimize your carbon footprint. Whether it’s hitting the pavement for a long walk, roller-skating to the nearest park or taking a family bike ride for ice cream, try getting through the day with some person-power.
