One of the things I love most about cooking is the connections you can make with people.
Some of my best memories with my family and friends have happened in the kitchen or at the dinner table enjoying a great meal and conversation. Food brings people together and that is one of the main reasons I enjoy cooking so much. At Girls on the Run, one of the 5 Cs we learn about is connection, and the importance of connecting with others. As I mentioned above, food brings people together so today I am going to share my ideas, tips and tricks for throwing a build-your-own pizza night for your family and friends. Because life is all about connecting with others!
Pizza is one of my favorite things to whip up for my family and friends. Not only can you make pizza personal to fit everyone’s liking, but the possibilities are endless for toppings! Plus who doesn’t love a fun pizza night/party? Are you ready to get started?
Here are a few tools you will need for a fun build-your-own-pizza night:
Small Bowls to place toppings in
Flour (If rolling out dough)
Plates, napkins, and silverware
Now lets discuss some options for pizza crust! There are tons of pre-made refrigerated pizza doughs out there that are great for homemade pizza night! Trader Joe's has an awesome whole wheat pizza dough that is easy to work with and tastes great. What I like to do is portion out the dough into 4-6 servings, roll into a ball and let each person roll out their pizza dough to their desired thickness. Remember, check servings per container when buying pre-made pizza dough and buy enough for the number of people you will be serving. If you are feeling ambitious and want to make your own pizza crust from scratch then check out this recipe from Eating Well, it is one of my favorites!
More creative ideas for pizza crust:
Whole Wheat English Muffins - Great for big groups, each person gets their own!
Whole Wheat Tortillas - Make sure to bake these in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes prior to topping so they are nice and crispy!
Baguette - Sliced down the middle length wise and cut into 4 pizza portions.
Now let's talk about sauce! The sky is the limit here. I love setting out two to three sauce options so my family and friends can pick their favorite. Simply set out three small bowls filled with your pizza sauce options, remember to place spoons in the bowl so your guests can easily spread the sauce on their pizza crust.
Pizza sauce recommendations:
Hummus - A nice garlic hummus is delicious on pizza!
Jared Alfredo Sauce
Store Bought Pesto
Alright now for the fun part... the toppings. Get creative, and have some fun. I like to set out 6-7 small bowls with various toppings, don't forget the cheese!
Shredded Pepper Jack Cheese
Fresh Parmesan Cheese
Nutritional Yeast - Great dairy-free option
Soy Cheese - Another great dairy-free option
Meats - Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Turkey Sausage, Grilled Chicken, Shrimp
Veggies - Peppers, Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Onion, Spinach, Arugula
Fruits - Pineapple, Mandarin Oranges
Herbs - Cilantro, Basil, Parsley
Remember the above list of ingredients are just suggestions! Get creative and have fun! Enjoy!
