Fueling our Healthy Pace - Bake it Forward Chocolate Cinnamon Streusel Banana Bread

This time of year is truly magical. There is something about twinkling lights, the first snowfall (for those of us in colder states), the smell of fresh baked cookies and the extra time spent with family and loved ones that make the holiday season so special! 

At Girls on the Run we not only learn about how to be healthy, joyful and happy girls, we also learn how to be strong community leaders through our community impact projects. 

Each Girls on the Run team creates and implements a community impact project to learn about giving back to our communities, what it takes to be a strong leader in our communities and the importance of helping others. I truly believe there is no better time to give back to your community than during the holiday season, which is why I want to share with you Cooking Light's Campaign called Bake it Forward! Baking it Forward is an easy and fun way to show others just how much you care. To participate in Bake it Forward all you do is bake an extra batch of your favorite holiday treat! When you are done baking, you keep a batch of your sweet treat to enjoy and then you give your extra batch away to a friend, family, charity, coworkers or someone who could use a little lift in their spirit. 

To help you out, I thought I would share with you one of my favorite baked treats, Chocolate Cinnamon Streusel Banana Bread! Classic (and secretly healthy) banana bread gets an updated twist with a divine chocolate cinnamon streusel topping! This banana bread is mouthwatering and the perfect treat to wrap and give to someone special this holiday season. So let’s get baking and spread some holiday vheer in our communities! Chocolate Cinnamon Streusel Banana Bread 

Brunch N'Cupcakes - Base Recipe Adapted From Thrifty Treasures

12 Slices 



3 ripe bananas, mashed 

2 egg whites 

2 tablespoons butter, melted

1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce 

1/3 cup brown sugar 

1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoonbaking soda and baking powder

1 tablespoon cinnamon


2 tablespoons old fashioned oats

2 teaspoons sugar 

2 teaspoons cinnamon 

1 tablespoon butter

2 tablespoons sliced almonds

2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips

**Note - Have little hands helping you out in the kitchen? Little hands can help measure out ingredients, mix the banana bread together and help sprinkle the delicious chocolate cinnamon topping on the slightly cooled bread! 


  1. In a large bowl, mix together mashed bananas and brown sugar until well combined.

  2. Add in your applesauce, egg whites and butter. Stir until combined, set aside.

  3. In another bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon. Slowly add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and stir until wet and dry ingredients are combined.

  4. Pour bread dough into a greased loaf pan.

  5. In a small bowl, combine topping ingredients (excluding chocolate chips) until course crumbles form. Evenly spread crumb topping over banana bread and bake in a 350 degree oven for 55 minutes.  

  6. While banana bread is still warm (and in pan) sprinkle top of banana bread with mini chocolate chips. Allow bread to cool completely before removing from pan! Slice and enjoy!
